My friend's odyssey with Odisha

The quality of our collective living hinges on each member's ability to satisfy his basic and natural needs and empathically understand the fellow members' behaviour to him and respect their feelings. However, on earth, there are certain heaven-like places which upon visiting induce one with a feeling of oneness of mankind, sense of universal brotherhood and the common spiritual essence of all religions. One such place is Orissa. It attracts people from all over the country and once they visit, they get addicted to its heavenly charm. Here, each and every monument speaks a distinct language and wisdom.

One of my close friends recently visited Orissa and experienced the joy which was divine and pious. His tour started with the capital of Orissa, Bhubaneswar. The most important thing that attracted my friend was the helpful nature of the people. Although he had language problem, the people there patiently tried to understand him and helped him. This inner connection among all human beings impressed him the most. His attraction towards the city increased when he visited the temples and the monuments.

His next visit was the most pious place on the earth i.e. Puri – the Abode of Lord Jagannath. Everything in this place had a soothing effect on him. The structures of the various temples, the way they are decorated and the atmosphere within and outside – all gave him the wafts of rich spirituality. He was emphatic in stating that one can easily connect with the Supreme by visiting these temples. The Mahaprasad served in the Jagannath Temple had a taste which was unmatchable – it seemed to him that as if the Universal Mother had prepared it with Her own hands.

The next beautiful place visited by my friend was the Chilika Lake – the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in the World. It was to him just an example of God's architecture. The horizon where the lake and the sky were touching, it seemed as if the sky was complimenting the beauty and the purity of water. The birds gliding above the water made the view more enchanting and the fishermen with boats made the landscape perfect. My friend had a boat ride and it astonished him a lot when all of a sudden he sighted a dolphin; to him it was like a dream. For a moment, he was in a deep thought. When nature is giving us so much beautiful things to see and enjoy apart from fulfilling all our basic needs, why are we then destroying it in the name of development? Is it mostly to satisfy our perverse order of needs?

Soon his thoughts were interrupted by a loud music. A new shop was opening nearby the Lake. He went there. The owner of the shop welcomed him and warmly offered some snacks and tea. While leaving, he was also presented with a New Year calendar. On his way back, it occurred to him that the importance of a place does not depend much on the superior infrastructure or rich lifestyle but the way people connect to a stranger and treat them with pure heart.
